Nicaragua President calls off controversial reform


(MENAFN) Nicaragua's President Daniel Ortega has canceled that a controversial reform of the country's welfare system which sparked chaos, leaving 24 demonstrators dead.

Ortega declared that the Nicaraguan Institute for Social Security has voted to lift the decision approved, which stated on rising the employer contributions and lowering the total benefits.

The demonstrators were vastly considered as the largest challenge which faced Ortega, since he took office eleven years ago.

The president confirmed: "The incident of violence that have happened are regrettable," and "we must reestablish order, we will not allow chaos, crime and looting to reign,"
