Qatar switches off for Earth Hour

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Lights at the Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa) Awareness Park in Doha were switched off for an hour, between 8.30pm and 9.30pm, yesterday as part of the Earth Hour celebrations in the country.
Kahramaa was among the various Qatari entities that took part in the global initiative, which is held annually to encourage individuals, communities, businesses and different public and private organisations to turn off non-essential lights for an hour.
HE the Minister of Energy and Industry Dr Mohamed bin Saleh al-Sada and Kahramaa president Issa bin Hilal al-Kuwari jointly switched off power at the Awareness Park to mark the occasion.
The occasion, according to Kahramaa officials present on the occasion, is observed in the country to make residents aware of the importance of conserving power.
Huge savings have been made in Qatar by reducing the use of water and electricity in the last six years as part of the ongoing Tarsheed campaign.
A Tarsheed carnival is also being held until March 29 at the Awareness Park to highlight the necessity of conserving energy resources.
Kahramaa officials also reminded the audience that power was switched off at other buildings of the corporations, too, as part of Earth Hour.
