Woman IS 'recruiter' jailed for seven years in Kerala

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) A Kerala court yesterday sentenced a woman from Bihar to seven years in jail in the first Islamic State (IS) case registered in the state.
Yasmin Mohamed Zahid of Bihar was found guilty of recruiting 15 people from Kasargod district and helping them migrate to Afghanistan to join the terror group.
The Kerala police had initially registered missing persons cases, and the National Investigation Agency later joined the probe after the involvement of IS was suspected.
Yasmin had attempted to join the IS with her son and was about to leave for Kabul when she was arrested by the Kerala police at the Delhi International Airport on July 30, 2016.
The NIA had filed the charge-sheet against Yasmin, the only one to be arrested in the case, and her husband Abdul Rasheed, who is believed to be in Afghanistan.
Yasmin told the police that she got married to Rashid in a ceremony solemnised over phone in which co-accused Shihas acted as the ‘wali' (guardian) of the bride, while two other co-accused Ashfak and Yahya acted as witnesses.
She also claimed that Rashid had radicalised nearly 40 youths from Kerala.
According to the police, Yasmin is computer literate with a good command over English, Hindi and Urdu.
She was earlier married to her cousin, but the marriage ended in divorce after a year. She has a five-year-old son. Her father and two brothers live in Saudi Arabia.
The NIA meanwhile has stepped up its hunt for the remaining accused in the case with the help of Interpol.
The court cross-examined 52 prosecution and three defence witnesses and examined digital and other material evidence.
Some of the accused are reported to have been killed while fighting for the IS against security forces in Afghanistan.
