Azerbaijan in talks over OPEC possible membership


(MENAFN) Azerbaijan has been reported to be seeking to join the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) as raises the matter in talks.

The country has launched its discussions on the possibility after it joined forces with OPEC to reduce oil production so as to bring stability to the market.

President Ilham Aliyev and Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov were said to have met with OPEC Secretary-General Mohammad Barkindo to hold talks on "prospects of future cooperation between Azerbaijan and OPEC."

Citing a couple of sources, Reuters reported "there are three options. First - OPEC membership, the second - to become an associate member and the third - to continue cooperation the way it is now."
