10th Qatar National Robot Olympiad 2018 opens at QNCC

DOHA: With the participation of 1,000 students from most of the independent and private schools, the 10th Qatar National Robot Olympiad (NRO) 2018 opened at Qatar National Convention Center (QNCC) yesterday.

Under the event, the participating teams will be competing in six categories of robot competitions including junior, sumo, following the lines, collecting balls, free contest. Three teams from each category will qualify for final competition that will be held in last two days, said a release.

The preparation of the competition is continued for last three months readying students, trainers and referees whose total number is 75, said Maryam Al Awdai, Director of Zainab Preparatory School and Head of the Organising Committee of the Olympiad.

She said that the Olympiad will continue for two days in which more than 1000 students from public and private schools will compete.

Minister of Education and Higher EducationH E Dr. Mohammed bin Abdul Wahid Al Hammadi has approved a proposal to give an opportunity to the winner of second place to participate in the European Championship that will he held soon and the winner of first place to participate in the international champion slated to be held in the US in April, said Al Awdaid.

She added that Qatar emerged as a leading country in robot science regionally and globally.

The Minister of Education and Higher Education will open a technology school next academic year in which international robot science will be taught, said Al Awadi.

Robot science contributes in providing talent to the students and develop their innovative skills and robot is not merely an entertainment but it helps create innovation and boost the advanced ideas among students, she added.

Considering this point of view, the Ministry of Education and Higher Education supports robot science in all schools and provides necessities required in this sector.

The 10th edition of the Olympiad witnesses big number of participants. The championship will be tough as big number of students are participating. The competitions are being held separately for girls and boys. Students from all grades from primary to secondary schools are participating in the contest. The winning teams will be announced today and top three teams from each categories will be selected as winners.

The robot championship is very special in term of strong competition and management, said a parent of a participant, Ali Mohamad Al Marri.

'My daughter is participating in robot competition. Robot science is one of the most advanced knowledge of this modern age, said Al Marri.

Robot has its role in all fields of medicine, engineering and mathematics among many others, he said adding that the championship helps create awareness among children about modern science in this era.

A total of 64 teams are participating in the following the lines category of competition, said Rafat Isa Ghanam, Head of the Jury Bench of this category.

He said that the Arab Association for Robot provided many professional referees.
