Delhi Metro mystery: Decomposed body found in airport line
23 Feb 2018

In a shocking development, DMRC officials discovered a highly decomposed body inside a restricted tunnel of the Delhi Metro's airport line.

There's no information on who the person is, when they entered the tunnel or how they died.

The body was discovered during a routine track inspection, but CISF, in charge of security, is clueless how it escaped notice for so long.

Tunnels in the airport line are as deep as 18m
Facts

The 22.7km New Delhi-Dwarka airport line is mostly underground, with tunnels as deep as 18m.

Staff enters the tunnels through the gates at the end of the platforms, the keys of which remain with the station controller.

The area where the body was found is "an emergency shaft of a cross-passage, which opens at the ground level (and) is cordoned off," a spokesperson said.

What could have happened? Police probe 3 possibilities
Possibilities

DMRC officials discovered the body on February 9 during routine maintenance between New Delhi and Shivaji Stadium stations.

Cops suspect three possibilities: someone could have killed him and thrown the body from the emergency shaft; he might have gone there to steal something and fallen in through the emergency shaft; or authorized staff could have taken him inside and killed him.

CCTVs haven't helped, forensics has stepped in
Status

Delhi Police have launched a probe. CCTVs in the area haven't been helpful as they store footage of 30 days.

For now, they have ruled out the victim being a metro or CISF staffer as there has been no missing person complaints.

Forensic teams have collected DNA samples.

No case has been lodged yet.

But this incident brings to light possible loopholes in security.
