Lebanon affirms right to protect interests from Israeli aggression

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BEIRUT, Jan 31 (KUNA) -- Lebanon's Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil affirmed on Wednesday his country's right to use all possible means to defend its sovereignty, and protect its economic interests from any aggression, particularly by Israelis.

Bassil made his remarks, in a statement, in reply to Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman's recent call to international firms not to bid on a Lebanese offshore oil and gas exploration tender, known as "Block 9" and located in a disputed maritime territory.

Lebanon has voiced its strong rejection of Israeli remarks regarding Block 9 in a letter addressed to the United Nations on 18/1/2018, which also confirmed Block 9's borders falling entirely within Lebanon's commercial territory, said Bassil.

The letter also expressed Beirut's deep concern toward Israeli illegitimate claims of protecting its sovereign rights in Block 9, said the Lebanese minister.

Bassil also reminded the Israeli government of respecting the UN Charter and refraining from threats to use a military force. (end) wsm.ma
