UN thanks Jordan for allowing delivery of aid to Rukban camp

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Amman, Jan. 10 (Petra) -- The United Nations (UN) Office in Amman thanked Jordan for allowing the delivery of emergency UN assistance to Syrians in the Rukban camp after the Syrian government hasn't approved a UN request to deliver the aid to the camp's residents.

In a statement issued Wednesday, the UN Office in Amman said the United Nations in Syria asked the Syrian government for approval to deliver emergency aid to the camp, but the request has not been approved so far.

This prompted the Jordan UN office to submit another urgent request, which was met with an exceptional approval from the Jordanian government to alleviate the suffering and the severe cold on children and women there.

It said the United Nations resumed providing aid to an estimated 50,000 Syrians, who are still stranded in the area near the northeastern border with Syria, as well as providing food and relief items.

Most of the Al-Rukban area's inhabitants are women and children who have been living in a difficult and insecure environment since more than two years, the statement noted, adding that Jordan's approval of this exceptional humanitarian operation would allow the UN to alleviate the suffering of Syrians in the area, especially for the most vulnerable groups such as children, pregnant women and new mothers.
