Turkey summons UAE diplomat over tweet on Erdogan

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Istanbul: Turkey summoned a senior United Arab Emirates diplomat on Thursday to complain about a tweet by an Emirati minister that offended Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, media reported.
Turkish public television channel TRT said the foreign ministry summoned the Emirati charge d'affaires in Ankara -- the top UAE diplomat currently present in Turkey -- and complained about the post.

The Emirates' foreign minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahyan this week retweeted a post on Twitter in which a user made allegations of historic misdoings by "ancestors of Erdogan".

The tweet alleged that a former Ottoman governor pillaged and kidnapped people from the pilgrimage city of Medina in the early 20th century.

Erdogan had blasted the UAE minister as impertinent and spoiled by money on Thursday.

Without naming him, Erdogan said UAE Foreign Minister was ignorant.

"Some impertinent man sinks low and goes as far as accusing our ancestors of thievery ... What spoiled this man? He was spoiled by oil, by the money he has," Erdogan told an awards ceremony at his Ankara palace.

"When my ancestors were defending Medina, you impudent (man), where were yours? First, you have to give account for this," he added.
