Pakistan- 90% of world opium produced in Afghanistan, Senate body told


(MENAFN- Tribal News Network) PESHAWAR, 14 December: The Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) has said 90 percent of world's opium is being produced in Afghanistan out of which 42 percent is smuggled to Pakistan.

The ANF officials said this in a meeting of the Senate's Standing Committee on Finance chaired by Senator Saleem Mandviwalla on Wednesday. Director General ANF and other officials attended the meeting.

The ANF officials told the committee that opium has been sowed on 300,000 acres land in Afghanistan this year and its impacts will become visible in Pakistan next year. He said narcotics worth Rs600 billion have been set on fire this year.

Senator Saud Majeed said why Pakistan was setting fire to drugs worth billions and it could earn money by selling it in international market.

The ANF officials also talked about the increasing use of drugs at educational institutions.

Senator Saleem Mandviwalla said scope of the ANF should be increased to the whole country and it should have powers to conduct raids anywhere. The ANF secretary said a summary in this regard has been sent to the prime minister and he will hopefully approve it soon.
