Vice president of Nigeria quits ruling party
(MENAFN)In what is considered a clear sign to challenge Muhammadu Buhari for the presidency in 2019, former vice-president, Atiku Abubakar, on Friday quit the country's ruling party.
Abubakar, who was deputy to Olusegun Obasanjo from 1999 to 2007, said Buhari's All Progressives Congress (APC) was not able to create the change it promised before coming to power in 2015.
He said it had become as factionalized as its opponents, claiming that it is "draconian clampdown on all forms of democracy within the party and the government it produced,"
"The party we put in place has failed and continues to fail our people, especially our young people." Abubakar, who turns 71 on Saturday, stated.
