Oman participates in World Children's Day activities

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- Under the auspices of H H Sayyida Muna al Said, Oman, for the first time, took part in the World Children's Day activities on Monday.

November 20 marks the anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the mobilisation of the first World Children's Day.

'World Children's Day is a fun day with a serious message – children around the world are coming together to help save children's lives, fight for their rights and shine the spotlight on the most pressing challenges faced by their generation,' Lana al Wreikat, Unicef representative, was quoted as saying in a press release.

As the main event of the day, children came together to organise a walkathon at Qurum Natural Park.

It was followed by awarding winners of the WCD Competition, where school children had been invited by the Ministry of Education to participate with drawings or essays under the title, 'What would the world look like if children took over?'

Unicef's Oman Country Office along with partners, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Social Development, had planned and executed a number of successful activities in coordination with government officials and large companies.

The activities included conducting interviews with H E Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Obaid al Sa'eedi, Minister of Health; H E Sheikh Mohammed bin Said bin Saif al Kalbani, Minister of Social Development and H E Dr Hamood al Harthy, Undersecretary in the Ministry of Education.

'With 27.2 per cent of the Omani population being 19 years old and under, children are an integral and important segment of society who need to be heard and whose ideas need to be validated. The great response and enthusiasms we received from all participants in our World Children's Day events shows the constant commitment that Oman has to children and to raising their voices. Today's walkathon would not have been possible without the children and the support of our partner government institutions,' Lana said.

Globally, children took over key roles on the day, in media, politics, business, sport and entertainment to voice their support for millions of their peers who are unschooled, unprotected and uprooted.
