QU hosts workshop on tissue engineering, stem cell tech


(MENAFN- Gulf Times) More than 150 healthcare practitioners, academics, students, researchers and pharmacists attended the Continuous Professional Development (CPD) accredited workshop, which was recently held by the Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) at Qatar University (QU), QU-Health and Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF).
Themed ‘Tissue Engineering and Stem Cell Technologies', the event aimed to discuss tissue engineering and stem cell technologies, a popular area of research with the potential to cure serious diseases including cardiovascular, orthopaedic and neuronal disorders. The event's programme included lectures delivered by local and international experts in the field of tissue engineering and stem cell technologies. They provided a brief on their area of research and findings in stem cells.
Commenting on the event, QU College of Health Sciences dean and BRC director Dr Asma al-Thani said: 'The discussed topics reflect the support of higher education institutions to the health sector in keeping abreast of new technologies and medical development in Qatar.
QU-Health Continuous Professional Development for Health Care Practitioners co-ordinator Dr Hiba Bawadi said, 'This workshop contributes to fulfilling the need of healthcare providers to continuous education and awareness of the recent technologies in medicine.
BRC assistant professor of Metabolic Diseases and Cardiovascular Research Dr Huseyin Yalcin added, 'Regenerative medicine is a very popular field of research for generation of live tissue replacements that have the potential to cure today's many serious health conditions. We expect to see tissue-engineered, stem cell-seeded products in clinical practice in the near future.
