(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Laila Ali Mohamed Salem Almahri, WorldSkills Brazil 2015 UAE winner, said she hopes her talent, which helped land her post as a nurse in Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, will help inspire other young Emiratis to join the nursing field.
"Having more Emirati nurses will help in communicating with elderly Emirati patients, because they will feel more comfortable and it is better for their psychological wellbeing," she told Khaleej Times.
The 23-year-old said she always had a passion for helping those around her. "I think if someone loves what he does, then he will do his best in his career - and for me, nursing is a great career.
She is the first from her family to join the medical field. "After graduating from high school, I realised I have a passion for nursing and an interest in the medical field."
However, she highlighted that her parent's initial response to her choice of studies was one of scepticism. "Nursing in the UAE is not very common - people feel it's a tough career to join. So my father and mother thought it will be tough for me and suggested I try another field. But they still supported my choice and my studies."
The inspirational Emirati, who graduated in May, said she hopes to help change society's perception of nursing. "I want to change people's ideas about nursing, because they are not proud of nursing careers, I don't know why. They need to know that nursing is interesting and difficult."
Almahri said she is proud to witness many Emiratis competing this year and hopes to see more Emiratis bring home the gold. Almahri brought home two medals from Brazil when she was just 20 years old. "WorldSkills gave me confidence and boosted my own skills," said the young nurse, who started her first day at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi on Sunday.
