Mumbai: Dabbawalas suspend service after heavy rains lash city

A day after Mumbai witnessed heavy rains, the city's dabbawalas have canceled their deliveries today owing to the disruption of the suburban rail services.
Over 5,000 dabbawalas deliver more than 2,00,000 tiffins to office-goers every day; the tiffin delivery men use the local trains to deliver lunchboxes.
Mumbai Dabbawala Association spokesperson, Subhash Talekar, said their services would resume tomorrow.

Mumbai's Western, Central and Harbour suburban railway lines that connect 70 stations are very crucial for the dabbawalas, most of whom come from the villages near Pune.
Talekar said the three lines help the men deliver tiffins from suburbs to business hubs at Mumbai's southern end.
Dabbawalas earlier took a day off on 29 August when Mumbai received 315mm rainfall.

Dabbawala services have been suspended for the second time in three weeks due to the rains. Torrential rains yesterday have flooded several low-lying areas in the city. The rains badly hit Mumbai's rail, road, and air traffic.
