Al Rayyan Municipality has begun an inspection campaign focusing on food items consumed mostly by students such as juices, fruits, chocolates, sandwiches and other items.
An official at Al Rayyan Municipality told The Peninsula that the campaign started a couple of days ago. The inspectors have started visiting outlets in malls, hypermarkets and retail outlets which sell food items for schools. 'It doesn't mean that we are ignoring other food items but we are focusing more on edible items related to students because its demand will shoot up now because of the reopening of schools.
He also said that the campaign will continue for one week to ensure the safety of students.
About the inspection at canteens, he said that the Municipality was not responsible for because a special committee from the Ministry of Education and Higher Education has been entrusted with the task.
'We advise outlets to avoid violations of rules related to food safety. We have advised them not to buy large quantities of food items. Cafeterias are advised to use only specified material for packing. These materials should meet the specifications and not use newspapers for packing food because doing that will attract a fine of QR15,000, because it violates specifications and standards, he added.
The source also said that the Municipality didn't receive any complaint during Eid holidays from people about food which meant that food outlets were following Municipality rules.
'During this period, inspection campaigns continued and we didn't register any major violation. But, there were some warnings registered related to hygiene. The warnings related to cases where some restaurant workers leave food items outside refrigerators for a long time, he added.
He also added that during Eid holidays, inspections focused on commercial markets as they witnessed more demand. 'Also, inspections were conducted on abattoirs in the municipality and veterinary doctors were working from 6am to 5pm to meet people's demands, he added.
