20 sailors rescued from sinking vessel off the coast of Oman
(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- Twenty sailors were rescued by an Omani fisherman from a sinking merchant ship off the coast of Al Wusta on Sunday, the ROP has said. The Tanzanian-flagged ship sank off the coast of the wilayat of Al Jaser in Al Wusta.
As per media reports, the ship had left the UAE and was on its way to the port of Eritrea in the Red Sea.
The ship was ferrying construction materials and thecrew comprised various nationalities.
In a statement on its twitter account, the Ministry of transport and Communications (MoTC) said the incident occurred north-east of Ras al Lakbi in Al Jaser.
MoTC said that the ship was loaded with general cargo consisting of sand and iron bars.
The Omani fisherman had alerted the local police station whose officials took the crew members to the Al Jaser Hospital. 'Medical tests were conducted on the crew members and all are said to be in good health,' the ROP said.
Omani authorities are in touch with local shipping agents for repatriation of the rescued sailors. The Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs too confirmed the incident and affirmed its commitment towards protecting the Omani environment.
