Morocco- Moroccan wins European Inventor of the Year Award

Rabat - Moroccan biologist Adnane Remmal, has been lauded for his work developing a new method improving the effectiveness of antibiotics and was awarded European Inventor Award on Thursday for inventing an anti-antibiotic.

Remmal received the award from the European Patent Office (EPO) during an official ceremony in Venice on June 15, which celebrated several years of his work.

The new prize confirmed the need to find alternatives to antibiotics. "Adnane Remmal's innovation not only has the potential to save lives, but can offer a new tool in the fight against the growing threat of antibiotic-resistant microbes," said EPO President Benoît Battistelli when announcing the 2017 finalists.

Developed in a laboratory at the Ben Abdellah University in Fez, this drug poses as an alternative to the systematic use of antibiotics, which have made bacteria more resistant or even impossible to treat.

On May 13, 2015, the biologist won the Innovation Award for Africa for a similar treatment for animals. The biologist then proposed a solution to improve farm production, which would also respect the health of the consumers.

The medicine will be available for purchase by the end of the 2017.
