(MENAFN- Jordan Times) AMMAN — His Majesty King Abdullah and US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley on Monday reviewed the Jordanian-US cooperation and strategic partnership relations, as well as the latest regional developments.
During the meeting, held at Al Husseiniya Palace, His Majesty and Haley addressed the burdens imposed by the Syrian refugee influx on the Jordanian economy and its limited resources, according to a Royal Court statement.
They highlighted the importance of the international community to increase its support to the Kingdom to help it continue presenting humanitarian assistance to the refugees.
King Abdullah and Haley went over efforts aimed at reaching a political solution to the Syrian crisis through the Geneva talks.
For her part, Haley expressed appreciation for Jordan for hosting Syrian refugees and offering them educational and health services, among others, despite the pressure refugees place on local host communities.
In this regard, she called on the international community to present more support to enable Jordan to continue implementing its development programmes and dealing with the repercussions of the refugee crisis.
Also on Monday, King Abdullah met with Cypriot Defence Minister Christoforos Fokaides and discussed cooperation between Jordan and Cyprus in the defence field, as well as the latest regional and international developments.
Talks focused on the need to build on the talks held by His Majesty and Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades during the World Economic Forum held at the Dead Sea recently.
The King and the Cypriot minister also reviewed the war on terrorism within a holistic approach, in addition to efforts that aim at reaching political solutions to regional crises in order to achieve security and stability for the region's peoples.
Royal Court Chief Fayez Tarawneh and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs-of-Staff Lt. Gen. Mahmoud Freihat attended the meeting.
Also on Monday, His Majesty King Abdullah met with a delegation from the Friends of Jordan's group at the European Parliament over Jordanian-EU relations and regional developments, a Royal Court statement said.
The meeting covered means of enhancing cooperation, especially in the economic field, coordination on various regional and international issues, and means to achieve peace and stability in the Middle East and the world.
His Majesty and the delegation also addressed the peace process and efforts to resume the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations based on the two-state solution as the sole solution to end the conflict.
They also went over the challenges and crises the region is facing as well as endeavours to reach political solutions to these conflicts.
The growing burdens imposed on Jordan by the Syrian refugee crisis were also on the agenda, along with the fight against terrorism 'within a holistic approach'.
For their part, the lawmakers expressed appreciation for His Majesty King Abdullah's efforts to enhance the partnership between Jordan and the EU countries, in addition to His endeavours to realise just peace in the region.
Royal Court Chief Fayez Taraweneh and the King Office Director Jaafar Hassan attended the meeting.
Also on Monday, Prime Minister Hani Mulki met with the EU delegation, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
During the meeting, attended by Minister of Political and Parliamentary Affairs and Minister of State Musa Maaytah, Minister of State for Media Affairs Mohammad Momani, Mulki and the delegation discussed the partnership between Jordan and the EU and means to boost it.
Mulki outlined the repercussions of the Syrian crisis on Jordan as a result of hosting 1.3 million refugees, who, he said, increased pressure on the Kingdom's vital sectors such as health, education and water.
He underlined the operational cost of the infrastructure projects that Jordan has implemented to ease the pressure of the refugees.
The premier stressed that Jordan is carrying out this burden on behalf of the international community, urging increased international support for the Kingdom.
Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Monday held two separate meetings with a delegation from the Friends of Jordan's group at the European Parliament and a delegation for relations with the Mashreq countries.
The two meetings reviewed bilateral relations between the Kingdom and the EU, in addition to the latest regional developments, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
Safadi also met Haley over ways to enhance bilateral relations between Amman and Washington, and reviewed regional issues, especially the Syrian refugee crisis and its repercussions on Jordan, which presents them all humanitarian aid, Petra added.
