EU, Algeria seek to boost energy coop.

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, April 11 (KUNA) -- EU Commissioner for climate action and energy Miguel Arias Canete met here Tuesday visiting Algerian Energy Minister Noureddine Boutarfa to discuss EU-Algeria energy relations.

"Today's visit of minister Boutarfa marks the deepening of the partnership on energy between the EU and Algeria. We spoke about natural gas which is a strategic issue for both countries. Algeria is a major and always reliable supplier for Europe," Carete told a joint press conference after the meeting.

"New supply contacts, new investments in exploration and production are necessary. There are vast intact resources of Algerian gas. We are very close to Algeria. There is very good transport infrastructure for gas from Algeria to Europe which means that all the conditions are there for the EU to benefit from the Algerian gas and for Algeria to better benefit from the European market," he added.

On his part, Boutarfa said that "we want our economy to be integrated in this European economy. On the other hand, we want Europe to be more present in Algeria." "We want to bring more stability to the African market and energy is the basis of stability. If we do not have energy we cannot do anything. There is also a field that we cannot lose sight of and the renewables can lead to more stability. We have decided to work together on that sight and in that aspect as well," he noted. (end) nk.mt
