UAE is pioneering example in international security, fighting organised crime, says UN official

From Ahmed Jamal ABU DHABI, 29th March, 2017 (WAM) -- Dr. Hatem Fouad Ali, Regional Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in GCC countries, has praised the UAE's support for seven projects being executed by the Interpol Foundation to fight terrorism and organised crime around the world.

During an interview with the Emirates News Agency, WAM, on the sidelines of the activities of the first Unity for Security Forum that is currently hosted by Abu Dhabi, he said that the UAE presents a pioneering example to be followed with these initiatives, in facing modern international security challenges and fighting organised crime.

He added that the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in GCC countries works in strategic partnership with the UAE, which hosts its regional headquarters, while stressing the desire to support the rest of the region's countries and strengthen their defences to fight security threats and organised crime.

Regarding the UAE's hosting of the Unity for Security Forum, he said, "the country stresses, through this international event, its full trust with international organisations that are represented in the Interpol Foundation and Interpol, and its support for strategic programmes for maintaining security and standing up to terrorist threats worldwide."

He stressed that through these pioneering initiatives, the UAE is now ahead of other countries, emphasising its care in establishing an integrated security system in the local community. At the same time, the UAE partners with different countries and supports international programmes to achieve the security and stability of people around the world.

He thanked the UAE's leadership and people for hosting the international forum and its support for the programmes of the Interpol Foundation, which reflects the UAE's prestigious stature, trust by the international community, and represents the partnership between the UAE and international organisations for a safer world.

The UAE announced a grant of AED197 million (50 million Euros) for the Interpol Foundation, with the aim of supporting the seven projects, including terrorism, electronic crimes, cultural heritage, endangered communities, car crimes, drugs and illegal commodities.
