The Community College of Qatar (CCQ) will organize the 4th Humanities Conference under the theme 'A Nation in Transition on March 29 - 30 at the City Center Rotana in Doha.
The college organised its first Humanities Conference in 2013 at the local level with the aim of promoting scholarly dialogue and exchange, contributing to the existing body of knowledge within the humanities and social sciences fields, said Dr Ibrahim Al-Naimi, President of CCQ. Since then, the college is organising this event on an annual basis and this year the conference will explore and examine the various challenges and successes of transition, said Al Naimi, speaking at a press conference at the CCQ headquarters yesterday.
"We want social science and humanities take its natural position and get the interests it deserves like any other discipline and its graduates have access to the labour market," he stressed, pointing out that the world including Qatar is witnessing great changes and "we want to know how these changes could serve the human being and our societies in particular."
Al Naimi highlighted that CCQ itself witnessed great change in the last six years in terms of facilities, the number of students from 100 students to 4,300 now and teaching 17 programs in both diploma and bachelor degrees.
"Therefore, the conference will examine lessons learned from past failures, identify strategies for successful transition, and help us recognise and acknowledge our roles and responsibilities to move all nations forward to a brighter future," he added.
The CCQ is the second largest college specialized in humanities after Qatar University and offers 17 courses in two shifts with a variety of students whose average age is 27 years, said Dr Abdallah Hazaimeh, CCQ Dean.
"It is a great opportunity for the students and teaching staff to take part in the conference where 20 papers will be presented by the college lecturers," he added.
The conference will explore changes through different disciplines such as human capital, education, family, gender roles, tradition, religion, the media, government, globalization, the economy, environment, differently-abled and disenfranchised persons.
Hazaimeh stressed that the college is trying to maintain the quality of education and expanding opportunities working in two shifts - morning and evening.
The conference will host participants from 14 countries and high-level keynote speakers including US Ambassador to Qatar Dana Shell Smith, said Dr Linda Lebile, Chair of Humanities and Social Sciences Department.
Ambassador Smith will speak on 'How Qatar's 2030 Vision will affect transition in Qatar and beyond" and Dr Hassan Al-Derham, President of Qatar University will deal with the topic 'A Nation in Transition and Dr. Adrian Holliday, Professor of Applied Linguistics at Canterbury Christ Church University, United Kingdom, wil speak on 'Cultural Change & Cultural Resilience.
What makes this year's conference different is the students' participation in essays and posters competitions and all departments are represented in the conference, Lebile said, adding that the conference is sponsored by Ooredoo, RasGas and QAPCO, among others.
