Divorce rate among Qataris declines


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Divorce rate among citizens shows a downward trend, with a decline of about 24 percent from 2009 to 2015, according to a report released by the Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics.
Divorce cases in 2015 reached 807 among Qatari males and 706 among females.
Divorce among Qatari women fell from 10.4 percent in 2009 to 7.9 percent in 2015. As for Qatari men, it dropped by 22.3 percent during the period 2009-2015 from 12.1 percent in 2009 to 9.4 percent in 2015.
Data from the report was presented at a seminar on divorce in Qatar organised by the Department of Youth Affairs at the Ministry of Culture and Sports on Wednesday at Hilton hotel.
Presenting the report by Wafa Al Sulaiti, Chairperson of Administrative Registration at the Ministry Muhammad Ali Akeeibad, Population Expert at the Ministry said, 'Most divorce cases occurred in Al Rayyan Municipality with 43.3 percent of the total cases, followed by Doha Municipality (29.2 percent), Al Wakra (5.9 percent), Umm Salal (5.2percent), Al-Sheehaniya (4.5percent), and the rest of the municipalities (Al-Khor, Al-Shamal, Al Dhaayen) by 4.3percent, he added.
Most cases of Qataris' divorces occurred in Al-Rayyan Municipality with 50.7 percent, followed by Doha (25.9 percent), Al-Sheehaniya (7.1 percent), Umm Salal (6.4 percent ), Al-Wakra (5.2 percent ), the rest of the municipalities (Al-Khor, Al-Shamal and Al-Dhaayen) 4.6 percent.
Non-Qataris' divorce declarations are mostly concentrated in Doha Municipality(40.4 percent ), followed by Al-Rayyan (35.8 percent), Al-Wakra (8.4 percent), Umm Salal (3.8 percent ), Al-Khor (2 percent), and the rest of the municipalities (Al Sheehaniya, Al-Shamal and Al Dhaayen) 2.4 percent.
The programme was divided into four main segments. First segment was about ‘Divorce problem in Qatar and reasons behind it'. Second segment was regarding ‘Islamic Rules in order to stop divorce'. Third segment was related to ‘rules which should be spread in community for the importance of family'. Fourth and last segment was about ‘the rules that media and social organisations should implement to rebuild the families.'
The research paper by Wifaq (Family consulting Center) mentioned the reasons behind divorce in Qatar which included lack of parent's role in children's life, economic problems, loans being issued by banks, lack of work-family balance and most importantly domestic violence.
Nasser AbdulAziz Al Mogaiseeb, youth activities pioneer and an organiser of the seminar told The Peninsula: 'This seminar aims to highlight all the issues the Qatari youth faces and find a suitable solution to the problems. Last year, the youth came out with new suggestions in this context.
'This year more than 80 people attended the seminar and gave 20 recommendations which included conducting a special course for the youth before marriage, he added.
The Ministry report further indicates that divorce cases are higher among Qatari spouses in the age group of 20 to 29 years, amounting to 42 percent of total Qatari divorce cases by age-group, followed by the age-group 30 to 39 years, amounting to 31.2 percent.
The lowest divorce rate was in the age group of under 20 years, reaching 0.1 percent due to the smaller number of married couples in this age group.
As for non-Qatari spouses, the highest percentage of divorce was among the age-group of 30 to 39 years with 41 percent, followed by the age-groups (20-29 years) and (40-49 years) with 25 percent and 20.6 percent respectively. The lowest divorce rate among non-Qataris is in the age-group of above 60 years in 2015.
The divorce rate during the first five years and before consummation constitutes 65.4 percent of total divorces by duration of married life (nearly two thirds of total divorce cases).
