Oman- Professional Chefs Competition held at food & hospitality expo

The seventh Professional Chefs Competition at the recently concluded Food & Hospitality Exhibition & Conference successfully closed with an awarding ceremony at the Oman International Exhibition Centre on Tuesday.

Thomas Oommen, honorary secretary, Oman Chefs Guild (OCG) and The F & B Guild of Oman, announced the winners of the competition amid an eager audience who watched and witnessed the participants' skill and talent in the live competition.

The gold, silver and bronze winners for the three-tier wedding cake category were from Modern Oman Bakery. The winners for the tapas category were from Crowne Plaza Hotel, Muscat (gold and bronze) and Shangri-La Barr al Jissah Resort & Spa bagged the silver. Crowne Plaza Hotel, Muscat once again took the gold medal for the Petit Fours category; Modern Oman Bakery won the silver medal and Millennium Resort Mussanah got the bronze medal.

For the five-course gourmet plated dinner, the winners for the gold and silver medals represented Shangri-La's Barr al Jissah Resort & Spa while Crowne Plaza Hotel took home the bronze medal.

In the newly introduced mystery basket live cooking category, there were two winners each: Shangri-La Barr al Jissah Resort & Spa (gold), Intercontinental Hotel Muscat (silver) and Crowne Plaza Hotel (bronze).

Chef Oswald Joccheim, executive chef, Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre and an OCG member, said, 'The Professional Chefs Competition is an avenue to promote young Omani chefs, verify culinary talent, creativity and hospitality.'

Oommen said, 'We have been cooperating with Omanexpo since 2009, when the first Professional Chefs Competition was launched at the Food & Hospitality exhibition with 62 participants from various 4- and 5-star hotels in Oman. Now on its seventh year, we are continuously helping develop local talent and advancing the food and hospitality industries. By introducing more categories into the competition, we are able to tap talent, hone skills and perfect techniques and styles and bring them to a higher level.'

Professional Chefs Competition was mainly sponsored by Al Ansari Trading Enterprise for the second year in a row, apart from being the platinum sponsor for the exhibition. Sreekumar N P, vice president of marketing, said, "It is always a pleasure to be part of food & hospitality as a sponsor and as an exhibitor. Our participation in this event is part of our aim to respond to the growing needs of the industry and work closely with the government, its institutions and entities related to this sector to promote tourism in Oman and the region.'

Ammar Ahmad, exhibition manager, Food & Hospitality Oman, said, 'We are glad to work with Oman Chefs Guild for this event and we hope to continue to present food & hospitality as a venue to promote Oman by showcasing local culinary talent and encouraging interest among the youth. With the addition this year of the Food Safety Conference, we have expanded our platform to tap the entire sector.'

Food & Hospitality was opened by H E Mohsin bin Mohammed al Sheikh, chairman, Muscat Municipality. It welcomed about 5,000 visitors.
