Toppling Assad regime
(MENAFN- Arab News) Beyond a shadow of doubt the atrocities committed by the regime of Bashar Assad paved the way for the militants belonging to the so-called Islamic State to take roots in Syria. Basically one evil gave rise to another.
Assad's regime had also committed major crimes like using chemical weapons against non-combatants. By doing so the regime had lost its legitimacy. Had the world acted swiftly against Assad the IS would not have even come to existence.
Poor Syrians are caught in the cross-fire. They are being slaughtered at the hands of the lunatics representing the IS and being bombed by the regime's warplanes. If reports are to be believed Assad is making full use of the international preoccupation with the IS by using chemical weapons and other weapons to annihilate the opposition forces and those who might pose a threat to his rule.
Since the beginning of the Syrian crisis more than 300000 people have been forced to flee their homeland.
China Russia and Iran's unflinching support to the brutal Syrian dictator is beyond comprehension. I also fail to understand US reluctance in taking stringent measures against the Assad regime. It is heartening that the world stands united against the menace of terrorism but they should also try to wipe out Assad and his evil regime at the earliest.
The support Assad is receiving from its allies show that if a regime has some backing it can commit any crime and get away with it.
The same goes for Israel as it is continuously flouting all international laws and committing crimes against humanity but due to the American support it is still thriving without any fear of backlash from the international community.
I am afraid until and unless the world powers mend their ways extremism will continue to threaten the social fabric of weaker countries. Anees Lokhande Alkhobar
