UN rep. regrets Iraqi MPs' failing to elect speaker

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) UN Special Representative for Iraq Nikolay Mladenov voiced regret over the newly-elected Iraqi parliament's failure to agree on a new speaker

"Iraqi politicians need to acknowledge great importance of the matter," Mladenov said in a press release

"Iraqis went out to elect a 'national unity' parliament on April 30th in order to swiftly address major social, humanitarian, political and security problems facing the country

"Any delay or failure in committing to constitutional deadlines would impact the country's unity and safety." Mladenov called on all politicians to set their differences aside and embrace the spirit of consensus so as to elect a speaker in the next session, scheduled for July 8th

"Such step would enable the parliament to elect a new president and carry on forward in the process of forming the government," he noted

Earlier today, the Iraqi parliament convened its first session of the third legislative term amid lack of consensus on the state's top three posts; the president, speaker and premier
