IGAD Emergency Summit Postponed

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Khartoum May 02 - The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has postponed the emergency summit it decided to hold tomorrow in Juba to discuss the repercussions of the situation in the state of South Sudan to a later date "for further arrangements and consultations." IGAD announced yesterday that it will hold tomorrow an emergency summit at the level of heads of state in Juba the capital of South Sudan to discuss the current situation in order to come out with decisions to halt the devastating war raging since mid-December last year between the government and rebel forces led by former vice president Riek Machar.

IGAD failed to hold its summit which was scheduled in Juba last January because of the deteriorating security situation but was held in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa on the sidelines of the African summit. The African Union is taking over the mediation of peace talks between the government in Juba and rebels allied to Riek Machar and direct negotiations are currently being held at Addis Ababa to discuss issues such as comprehensive reconciliation reforms power-sharing wealth and internal accord on the disputed national agenda.
