Rachel Murphy
- Lecturer, School of History and Geography, University of Limerick
I am an Assistant Professor in Irish History at the University of Limerick, where I am acting Course Director on the MA History of Family.
I teach undergraduates (introductory history module and an elective in digital history) and postgraduates (four modules on the MA History of Family). I have supervised over 32 Masters students. I was a recipient of the University of Limerick Team Teaching Award in 2020.
My research interests lie in the history of landholding and the Irish landed estate, history of the family, local history and spatial humanities.
I take an interdisciplinary approach to my work collaborating with computer scientists, geographers and health scientists, and draw on genealogy, historical demography, oral history and digital humanities methods.
I have published on aspects of the landed estate, history of family, household analysis and digital humanities.
My work has been funded by The Heritage Council Stewardship Fund, the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education, and the AHSS Faculty Research Board.
I am Chair of the Irish Historic Towns Atlas Digital Working Group and a member of the National Library of Ireland's Genealogy and Heraldry Committee. I am a member of the European funded COST Action CA22116 The Great Leap: Multidisciplinary Approaches to Health Inequalities, 1800-2022 and the SFI Centre for Research Training in Artificial Intelligence.
I am currently writing my first monograph on the Irish landed estate and working on a demographic study of early twentieth-century Rathkeale, Co. Limerick.
