S-African Authorities Reject Viral Migrant Reporting Reward Claim

(MENAFN) South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs has dismissed as fake a widely shared social media notice that falsely alleged residents of Bloemfontein could receive cash rewards for reporting undocumented migrants.

The document, which was dated May 26, 2026, and directed to “all citizens and residents of Bloemfontein,” claimed to originate from immigration authorities. It stated that members of the public could earn payments of up to R5,000 ($300) by providing information that helped identify, locate, or detain undocumented foreign nationals.

Government officials have firmly rejected the authenticity of the notice and clarified that it was not issued by the Department of Home Affairs.

“The notice currently circulating is fraudulent and did not originate from the Department of Home Affairs,” the department said in a post on X.

Authorities further emphasized that neither the Department of Home Affairs nor the Minister of Home Affairs operates any program offering financial incentives to individuals who report undocumented migrants.

The department also urged citizens to exercise caution before sharing information online and to confirm the authenticity of public notices through official government channels.

“We encourage the public to verify information through official channels before sharing it. Let us all play our part in promoting accurate information, responsible engagement, and respect for the rule of law,” Home Affairs said.

The misleading notice surfaced amid ongoing public debate surrounding immigration enforcement and undocumented migration in South Africa, topics that regularly generate strong reactions and discussion across social media platforms.

Officials warned that the spread of inaccurate information can create confusion among the public and weaken confidence in official communications issued by government institutions.

According to the department, citizens should rely on verified government communication platforms for announcements, policy updates, and information relating to immigration matters in order to avoid being misled by fraudulent or unofficial content.
