New York Lawmaker Moves to Tax Trump ‘Anti-Weaponization’ Fund Payments
(MENAFN) A New York state legislator has proposed a measure that would impose a 100% state income tax on any residents receiving payments from the Trump administration’s so-called “anti-weaponization” fund, according to reports citing NBC News.
Assemblyman Alex Bores, a Democrat representing parts of Manhattan, introduced the idea as part of a broader legislative push he calls the Anti-Insurrectionist Act. The proposal targets what he describes as politically motivated payments, aiming to prevent New Yorkers from benefiting financially from the fund.
In comments shared on social media, Bores said: “It’s simple, if you’re a New Yorker and you take from this illegal slush fund, New York state will tax 100% of it,” He also added, “If you storm the Capitol and you take from this slush fund, too bad we’re taking it.”
According to a draft memo cited in reports, the legislation argues that no state resident should be enriched by what it characterizes as a government-backed political payout tied to agreements involving the Trump administration.
Bores said in correspondence with NBC News that while the state cannot intervene in federal actions, it can regulate how such payments are treated at the state level, particularly if they are viewed as resulting from what he described as unlawful political arrangements.
The White House has directed inquiries about the proposal to the Justice Department, which has not yet issued a response.
The proposal follows reports that the Justice Department established the “anti-weaponization” fund as part of a settlement involving President Donald Trump and the IRS. According to those reports, the fund was created after Trump agreed to drop a major lawsuit against the agency related to past investigations and searches, with the stated aim of addressing claims of governmental overreach.
