Veteran Trinamool MP Heckled In Own Constituency, Egg Hurled At Vehicle

(MENAFN- IANS) Kolkata, May 28 (IANS) Veteran Trinamool Congress leader and four-time party Lok Sabha member from Dum Dum constituency in North 24 Parganas district, Saugata Roy, was heckled by members of the public within his own constituency on Thursday afternoon after he came out of a police station following the submission of a memorandum.

On Thursday evening, Roy, a retired professor of physics by profession, went to Nimta Police Station to submit a memorandum seeking action over the alleged assault on Trinamool Congress workers in the area.

As he was coming out of the police station, a group of people suddenly surrounded Roy and his associates. They started shouting slogans and also verbally abused the Trinamool Congress MP, calling him a“thief”.

As Roy somehow tried to get out of the commotion and enter his vehicle, an egg was hurled by someone. However, fortunately, the egg did not hit the Lok Sabha member and instead struck his vehicle.

Later, while speaking to mediapersons, Roy accused Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) supporters of being involved in the“hooliganism”.

However, the state BJP denied any involvement in the matter.

“Our party has no connection with the incident. We do not believe in such rowdy activities. However, at the same time, I will say that although the development was unwarranted, it was not unusual,” said BJP state spokesman Debojit Sarkar.

In the recently concluded West Bengal Assembly elections, Trinamool Congress candidates were defeated in six of the seven Assembly constituencies under the Dum Dum Lok Sabha seat. The only Assembly constituency under Dum Dum where the Trinamool Congress retained its seat was Kamarhati.

Maverick party legislator Madan Mitra was re-elected from that constituency this time as well.

In fact, for quite some time, Dum Dum Lok Sabha constituency has been in the news over Trinamool Congress factionalism. In the past too, there had been several instances when Roy and Mitra made media statements against each other.
