Sinkhole Disrupts Operations at LaGuardia Airport
(MENAFN) A sinkhole discovered near a runway at LaGuardia Airport in New York City threw Wednesday morning operations into disarray, prompting an immediate shutdown and triggering a cascade of flight delays and cancellations that authorities warned could intensify with storms on the horizon.
Ground crews uncovered the void near Runway 4/22 at approximately 11 a.m. local time (1599GMT) during a routine airfield inspection, the Port Authority of New York said. The discovery triggered an immediate response from emergency construction and engineering teams deployed to assess structural damage and carry out repairs.
"The runway was immediately shut down, and emergency construction and engineering crews are onsite to determine the cause and complete necessary repairs as quickly and safely as possible," the airport said in a statement.
With the closure already straining normal traffic flow, LaGuardia cautioned that conditions could deteriorate further as severe weather approaches the region.
"Travelers should expect delays and cancellations, particularly with forecast thunderstorms expected later today, and are strongly encouraged to check directly with their airlines for the latest flight status information," the airport said.
Passengers with LaGuardia departures or arrivals are urged to contact their carriers directly for real-time updates before heading to the airport.
