Erdogan Discusses Regional Tensions, EU Ties in Call with Von Der Leyen
(MENAFN) Recep Tayyip Erdogan held a phone call on Tuesday with Ursula von der Leyen, during which both sides discussed Türkiye–EU relations as well as broader regional and global developments, according to reports.
The conversation came amid rising regional tensions, which Erdogan said further demonstrate the strategic importance of stronger ties between Türkiye and the European Union.
According to the Turkish Communications Directorate, Erdogan stated during the call that Türkiye has been actively working to support a ceasefire and promote stability in the ongoing regional conflict. He also emphasized the importance of reopening the Strait of Hormuz as soon as possible.
Erdogan further accused Israel of seeking to prolong regional conflicts and of violating international law, including what he described as acts of piracy, calling for increased international pressure on Israel, as stated by reports.
The Turkish president also stressed the benefits of including Türkiye in Europe’s security initiatives. He reiterated calls to modernize the Türkiye–EU Customs Union and expand cooperation across multiple sectors in order to deepen economic integration and advance shared interests between both sides.
