Jury Rejects Elon Musk Lawsuit Against OpenAI CEO Sam Altman

(MENAFN) A jury in California on Monday ruled against Elon Musk in his lawsuit targeting Sam Altman and OpenAI, bringing an end to a high-profile three-week legal battle between the two technology figures, according to reports.

Musk filed the case in 2024, accusing OpenAI — the developer of ChatGPT — of abandoning what he described as its original commitment to operate as a nonprofit organization.

Microsoft, which began investing in OpenAI in 2019, was also included in the lawsuit. Musk alleged that the company had supported the AI firm in what he described as a breach of charitable obligations, but the court dismissed those accusations as well.

According to reports, Musk sought to compel OpenAI and Microsoft to surrender up to $134 billion in alleged “ill-gotten gains.” He also requested the removal of Altman and OpenAI President Greg Brockman from leadership positions and aimed to reverse the company’s 2025 restructuring, which expanded its for-profit operations.

The lawsuit stated that any recovered funds should be directed to an OpenAI-related charity rather than awarded to Musk personally, according to reports.
