Kallas Says Global Powers Prefer a Divided Europe
(MENAFN) EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said major global powers including the United States, China, and Russia would rather see Europe fragmented than united because a cohesive European Union has the strength to act as a major geopolitical player.
Speaking Sunday at the Lennart Meri Conference in Tallinn, Kallas argued that the EU’s combined influence is exactly what outside powers seek to weaken.
“They don’t like the European Union; that’s very clear,” she said. “If we stick together, if we operate together, then we are equal powers; we are strong.”
Her comments came as European governments continue debating the future reliability of Washington’s security commitments toward Europe.
Kallas said influential countries often find it easier to engage separately with individual European states rather than negotiate with the EU as a unified bloc, describing such efforts as part of a broader “divide-and-conquer strategy.”
She also called on EU member states to avoid policies or disagreements that could undermine unity within the bloc, warning that internal fragmentation could reduce Europe’s international influence during a period of growing geopolitical tensions.
“Why these powers want to dismantle the European Union is because we are much stronger when we are together,” she said.
