UN Appeals For Additional $331.5M To Assist Lebanon
On its website, the UN quoted its Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Imran Riza as saying that humanitarian needs were increasing every day as the conflict continued and that additional funding was required to sustain relief operations.
He expressed concern over the scale of destruction caused by airstrikes, drone attacks and shelling, saying hospitals, health centres, government buildings, water supply facilities and agricultural land had been damaged, while a number of schools had been turned into shelters for displaced people.
According to him, more than 3,500 people have been killed and over 10,000 others wounded since the recent escalation of violence, while nearly one million people remain displaced from their homes.
Riza added that health workers and aid personnel were facing serious risks and that many residential areas had been reduced to rubble.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) also said affected communities were rapidly losing their ability to cope with the crisis and that essential services were coming under increasing pressure.
Meanwhile, Reuters, quoting Lebanese officials, reported that more than 3,500 people, including civilians and military personnel, have been killed in Israeli attacks in the country since March 2 this year.
