Taiwan Says It Won’t Be “Sacrificed or Traded Away” After Trump Remarks
(MENAFN) William Lai Ching-te said on Sunday that Taiwan “will never be sacrificed or traded away,” responding to remarks by US President Donald Trump urging both Taipei and Beijing to ease tensions.
Trump had said in an interview on Friday that he was “not looking to have someone go independent, and we have to travel 9,500 miles to fight a war. I want Taiwan to cool down; I want China to cool down,” referring to rising friction between the two sides.
In a post on Facebook, Lai stressed that preserving peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait remains a shared interest among Taiwan, the United States, and other democratic partners, according to reports.
He added that Taiwan’s sovereignty “must not be infringed upon or annexed” and emphasized that the island’s future should be determined solely by its people.
Lai also argued that these principles reflect the existing international consensus and what he described as the current status quo that should be maintained.
The comments came shortly after Trump’s recent visit to Beijing, where he met Chinese President Xi Jinping multiple times. Their discussions reportedly covered a wide range of issues, including trade and broader regional security concerns.
