Overnight Hezbollah Attack Kills Israeli Soldier in S. Lebanon
(MENAFN) The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced Friday that an Israeli infantry soldier was killed in an overnight Hezbollah attack in southern Lebanon.
Israel's state-owned media reported that the soldier was struck by a mortar shell fired by Hezbollah at Israeli forces near the Litani River, in territory currently under Israeli army control in southern Lebanon.
The fallen soldier was identified as Staff Sergeant Negev Dagan, 20, a fighter with the IDF's elite Golani Brigade.
An Israeli channel reported that Golani troops have been carrying out a special operation in recent days along the banks of the Litani River, approximately 10 kilometers north of the Israeli border. According to the report, the operation is designed to dismantle significant Hezbollah military infrastructure both above and below ground, while also conducting engineering work along the riverbank to enable the passage of larger forces should the IDF be required to broaden its ground maneuver in Lebanon.
Separately, the IDF said it successfully intercepted a rocket launched by Hezbollah from Lebanon on Friday morning, targeting communities in the Lower Galilee region of northern Israel, near the Sea of Galilee. No casualties were reported, and Hezbollah offered no immediate comment on the strike.
The escalating exchanges come as Israel continues to expand its ground offensive in southern Lebanon and presses ahead with daily airstrikes — all despite a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon that officially took effect at midnight between April 16 and 17, following weeks of intensified cross-border hostilities tied to the broader U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran. Hezbollah has responded with sustained drone and rocket attacks on Israeli forces and communities in northern Israel.
Lebanon's Health Ministry reported as of Wednesday that 2,896 people have been killed and 8,824 injured on the Lebanese side since the current round of fighting erupted on March 2.
