Taiwan Calls China Main Risk To Peace And Stability In Region

(MENAFN- Khaama Press) Taiwan on Thursday accused China of being the“only danger” to peace and stability in the region after Chinese President Xi Jinping warned U.S. President Donald Trump that the Taiwan issue could trigger conflict.

Taiwan's Foreign Ministry issued the statement shortly after high-level talks between Trump and Xi in Beijing, where tensions over Taiwan, trade disputes, the Strait of Hormuz and the Iran conflict were discussed.

Xi reportedly told Trump that preserving stability in the Taiwan Strait remains a major shared interest between China and the United States, while also cautioning that the Taiwan issue remains highly sensitive for Beijing.

The Chinese leader urged Washington to handle the matter carefully and reiterated Beijing's opposition to continued U.S. arms sales and political support for Taiwan.

Taipei responded by saying China's military pressure, threats and growing regional assertiveness are the main factors undermining stability in East Asia.

Taiwan's government has repeatedly stated that only the island's people can decide their future and has rejected Beijing's sovereignty claims.

China considers Taiwan part of its territory and has repeatedly vowed to reunify the island with the mainland, including through military force if necessary.

Tensions around Taiwan have intensified in recent years as China increased military drills near the island and the United States expanded security and defense cooperation with Taipei.

The issue remains one of the most dangerous flashpoints in US-China relations, with analysts warning that any military escalation in the Taiwan Strait could have major global economic and security consequences.

The latest exchange also comes as Washington and Beijing attempt to stabilize broader relations strained by trade disputes, technology restrictions, regional military competition and growing tensions linked to the conflicts involving Iran and the Strait of Hormuz.
