India seeks “Unimpeded Passage” for Ships through Hormuz at BRICS Meeting
(MENAFN) India has urged that maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remain “unimpeded,” stressing its importance for global economic stability during a meeting of BRICS foreign ministers, according to reports.
Speaking at the gathering hosted in New Delhi, Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar highlighted concerns over rising instability in the Middle East, noting that ongoing tensions, risks to shipping routes, and disruptions to energy infrastructure underscore the fragility of the situation.
He said that “Safe and unimpeded maritime flows through international waterways, including the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea, remain vital for global economic well-being,” according to reports.
The meeting brought together senior diplomats from BRICS member and partner countries, including Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, as discussions focused on regional security and global economic risks.
According to reports, the broader tensions have intensified since military strikes involving the US and Israel against Iran earlier in the year, which triggered retaliatory actions and disruptions in regional maritime activity. A temporary ceasefire was later reached through mediation, though efforts to secure a lasting agreement have remained inconclusive.
