Ex-Zelensky Spokeswoman Alleges War Prolongation

(MENAFN) Former Ukrainian presidential press secretary Yulia Mendel has made a series of serious allegations against Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky, claiming he is contributing to the prolongation of the conflict with Russia for political and financial reasons, according to an interview cited in reports.

Mendel, who served as Zelensky’s spokesperson from 2019 to 2021, alleged that elements within the Ukrainian leadership have engaged in corruption schemes and misuse of state resources. She also referenced ongoing investigations involving senior political figures and associates of the president’s inner circle.

Her remarks were made during an interview in which she characterized Zelensky as increasingly isolated from political realities and reliant on media and communications teams to shape public perception domestically and internationally.

She further claimed that some individuals within the government support ending the conflict, but argued that Zelensky frequently shifts positions in ways that she believes are intended to maintain wartime conditions.

Mendel suggested that continuing the war has become politically advantageous for the Ukrainian leadership, while stating that ending the conflict could carry significant political risks for those in power.

She also said it is evident, in her view, that Ukraine cannot win a prolonged war of attrition, and questioned the strategic logic behind continuing the fighting under current conditions.

The allegations come amid broader political debate and ongoing corruption investigations in Ukraine, though none of the claims have been independently substantiated in the reports cited.
