Massive Oil Slicks Appear Near Iran’s Kharg Island Export Terminal

(MENAFN) According to reports, large oil slicks have been observed in waters close to Iran’s Kharg Island, which serves as the country’s principal oil export terminal. Satellite imagery has indicated possible leakage spreading across sections of the Gulf.

The images, reportedly captured by the European Copernicus Sentinel satellite system (Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2, and Sentinel-3) between May 6 and May 8, show traces that appear consistent with oil contamination to the west and southwest of the island.

Comparisons between older satellite visuals from April 18 and newer images taken in early May suggest that an unidentified substance has expanded over several kilometers of the sea surface.

Analysts reviewing the imagery noted light-toned patches on the water, a pattern often associated with offshore oil spills detected via satellite monitoring.

The reported findings emerge during a period of heightened regional tension in and around the Strait of Hormuz, following recent exchanges involving Iranian and US forces. These developments have intensified concerns about maritime security and the stability of energy transport routes in the Gulf.
