Iranian Tankers Reportedly Navigate Past US Naval Blockade

(MENAFN) Three vacant crude carriers operated by the National Iranian Tanker Company reportedly passed beyond the US Navy’s blockade perimeter during the last 48 hours after redirecting toward Iran through Pakistan’s Exclusive Economic Zone, according to TankerTrackers on Friday. The maritime analytics company stated that the three ships together possess the ability to transport nearly 5 million barrels of crude oil.

According to TankerTrackers, satellite imagery verified the presence of two of the vessels, while a third tanker identified as the Hasna emerged on the automatic identification system (AIS) late Thursday near the shoreline of Shinas, Oman. The ship was located around 254 nautical miles, equivalent to roughly 470 kilometers, west of the blockade boundary.

The intelligence firm explained that direct visual verification of the Hasna had not yet been completed. However, the names of the remaining two tankers detected through satellite monitoring were reportedly disclosed to the company’s subscribers and clients.

The incident followed a statement issued Wednesday by US Central Command, which announced that American forces had disabled the steering mechanism of the Iranian-flagged M/T Hasna in the Gulf of Oman after the crew allegedly ignored multiple warnings. CENTCOM stated that the vessel was empty and traveling through international waters toward an Iranian harbor when the interception occurred.

“Hasna is no longer transiting to Iran,” CENTCOM said, while emphasizing that the American naval blockade targeting ships attempting to access or depart Iranian ports continues to remain active.

Maritime tracking platforms describe the Hasna as an Iranian-flagged crude oil tanker constructed in 2003, measuring more than 333 meters in length. VesselFinder additionally categorizes the ship as being under US sanctions.
