NATO-Ukraine Council: War Lessons Must Shape Alliance's Future Defenses
“On May 6, a meeting of the NATO–Ukraine Council at the level of Permanent Representatives took place at NATO Headquarters. The discussion focused on the work of JATEC – the NATO–Ukraine Joint Analysis, Training and Education Centre,” the statement said.
Supreme Allied Commander Transformation Pierre Vandier and Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine Yevhen Moisiuk briefed participants during the meeting.
“Founded only last year to enhance interoperability and share the lessons Ukraine has learned from the full-scale war, JATEC has already made a powerful name for itself through its innovative competitions and the high-profile participation of Ukrainian servicemen in NATO exercises,” said Head of the Mission of Ukraine to NATO Alyona Hetmanchuk.
One of the key conclusions of the meeting was that“Ukraine's security is inseparable from NATO's security.”
“Importantly, Ukraine has proven that it is not only a recipient of security, but also a contributor,” the participants agreed.
“In less than a year of operation, JATEC has already delivered tangible results, helping provide Ukraine with innovative and timely solutions. For Ukraine, it is important that JATEC become an organization capable of turning battlefield challenges into unconventional and innovative solutions,” the statement noted.
It added that another conclusion of the meeting was that JATEC is a clear example of mutually beneficial cooperation between Ukraine and NATO –“a true two-way street.”

“Lessons learned from Ukraine's wartime experience through JATEC should be rapidly translated into concrete plans and updated approaches to defense. Adaptability, speed, and innovation are critical today and define success on the battlefield,” the meeting participants agreed.
Allies also reaffirmed their readiness to continue supporting Ukraine and to work jointly to strengthen its defense capabilities, including through JATEC.
As Ukrinform previously reported, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine continues systematic work to improve officer training and digitalize the educational process, including through the involvement of foreign instructors and the implementation of NATO standards.
