Wall Street Falls as Chip Stocks Slide and Oil Prices Rise

(MENAFN) According to reports, US stock markets ended lower on Tuesday as weakness in semiconductor shares and rising oil prices weighed on investor sentiment, while attention shifted toward upcoming earnings from major technology companies.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped slightly, while broader market indices also declined. The S&P 500 pulled back from a recent record high, and the Nasdaq Composite, which is heavily weighted toward technology stocks, recorded the largest decline among the major indexes.

Chipmakers were among the biggest drag on the market. Shares in several major semiconductor companies fell after a report suggested that OpenAI’s revenue and user growth had not met internal expectations. The report also indicated concerns within the company about whether future computing-related commitments could be met without stronger revenue growth.

As a result, several leading chip stocks declined, including Nvidia, Broadcom, AMD, Intel, and Oracle, all of which saw noticeable losses during the trading session.

Investors were also cautious ahead of a wave of earnings reports from major technology firms. Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft were scheduled to report results midweek, with Apple expected to follow shortly after.

At the same time, energy markets added additional pressure to equities. Oil prices moved higher amid uncertainty surrounding diplomatic efforts related to US–Iran discussions. Reports indicated that planned diplomatic engagements were adjusted or delayed, with differing signals emerging from officials on whether direct negotiations would take place.

Statements from US leadership suggested that discussions with Iran included proposals related to maritime routes and sanctions relief, though conflicting accounts were reported regarding the status of any formal meetings.

Market participants appeared to respond to a combination of geopolitical uncertainty, energy price movements, and concerns about the near-term outlook for major technology companies, contributing to the overall decline in equities.
