IAEA Reports Fatal Drone Strike Near Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant

(MENAFN) A driver was killed in a drone strike near Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant on Monday, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), as reported.

In a statement, the UN nuclear watchdog said it had been informed by the plant that a drone strike earlier in the day hit the transport workshop area near the facility, resulting in the death of a driver.

IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi emphasized concerns over the incident, stating that “strikes on or near nuclear power plants can endanger nuclear safety and must not take place.” He added that the agency’s team on-site would investigate the circumstances and continue monitoring conditions at the facility.

The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, located in southern Ukraine and under Russian control since the early stages of the war, has repeatedly drawn international concern due to ongoing security risks and the potential danger to nuclear safety amid the conflict.
