Suspect Planned Attack on Trump, Officials at Washington Gala
(MENAFN) Investigators said on Sunday that the gunman who attempted to breach a high-profile gala attended by US President Donald Trump had intended to assassinate the president along with other senior officials.
The incident occurred during a formal dinner event in Washington, where Trump was quickly evacuated from the ballroom by Secret Service agents as the situation unfolded. Authorities later released surveillance footage showing the suspect trying to rush past a security checkpoint before being stopped.
After a brief exchange of gunfire with security personnel, the attacker was apprehended at the scene on Saturday evening and taken into custody for questioning. He is expected to appear in federal court.
According to officials, the suspect has not been cooperating with investigators. Acting US Attorney General Todd Blanche stated, "He's not actively cooperating. I expect that he will be formally charged tomorrow morning in federal court in Washington."
Blanche added that early findings suggest the suspect had broader targets within the administration, saying, "We do believe, based upon just a very preliminary start to understanding what happened, that he was targeting members of the administration."
Authorities confirmed that the individual was armed with multiple weapons, including a shotgun, a handgun, and knives. He had reportedly been staying at the same hotel where the event was being held and had traveled across several US cities prior to the incident.
While the motive remains unclear, officials indicated that the suspect may have prepared for the attack over time, including acquiring weapons in recent years.
Trump later commented on the incident, describing the attacker as dangerous and referencing what he said was a manifesto, though no further verified details were released.
Reports also suggested that the suspect had communicated intentions to family members prior to the attack, outlining a plan to target officials based on rank.
Inside the venue, the response triggered panic among attendees, with many seeking cover under tables as security forces rushed in to secure the area.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the full scope of the suspect’s intentions and any potential connections.
