Belgian Firms View Türkiye as Fully Integrated with European Economy

(MENAFN) Belgian companies consider Türkiye to be closely integrated into Europe’s economic value chains, according to Belgium’s ambassador to Ankara, ahead of a major trade mission led by Queen Mathilde next month.

The ambassador, Hendrik Van de Velde, said that Turkish and European production networks are deeply interconnected, noting that more than half of Türkiye’s economy is tied to European markets.

His remarks came ahead of the Belgian Economic Mission to Türkiye, scheduled for May 10–14, with planned visits to Istanbul and Ankara. The delegation, led by Queen Mathilde, is expected to include around 450 participants, including approximately 250 business executives.

The visit will focus on expanding cooperation in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, logistics, renewable energy, digital transformation, defence, and aviation. Officials also anticipate potential agreements in areas including air transport, social security, agriculture, and healthcare.

Van de Velde highlighted the rapid growth of Türkiye’s defence industry over the past decade, describing it as a major contributor to the country’s economic expansion. As part of the mission, delegates are expected to visit leading Turkish defence companies, including Baykar, Turkish Aerospace Industries, and Aselsan.

He also noted that Belgium has its own established defence and aerospace firms, though generally smaller in scale, and suggested there is potential for complementary cooperation, particularly in aviation and space technologies.

On trade relations, the ambassador said bilateral trade between Türkiye and Belgium is valued at approximately €13 billion, with Belgium ranking among the top five EU partners for Turkish trade.

The upcoming mission is expected to further strengthen economic ties and explore new areas of industrial and technological collaboration between the two sides.
