Russian Delegation Attends Opening of N. Korea War Memorial Museum
(MENAFN) A Russian delegation led by the speaker of parliament has arrived in Pyongyang to take part in a ceremony marking the opening of a memorial museum dedicated to soldiers killed in the Ukraine conflict, according to state media reports.
The delegation, headed by Vyacheslav Volodin, speaker of Russia’s lower house of parliament, arrived on Saturday and was received by Jo Yong-won, chairman of North Korea’s Supreme People’s Assembly.
The new facility, named the Memorial Museum of Combat Feats at the Overseas Military Operations, is set to open in the North Korean capital.
During the visit, Jo and Volodin held discussions focused on expanding parliamentary exchanges and strengthening bilateral cooperation. Both sides also reaffirmed their commitment to implementing previously agreed arrangements between their leaderships, according to reports.
Over recent years, Russia and North Korea have significantly expanded their ties, formalizing what they describe as a comprehensive strategic partnership through a treaty signed in 2024. The agreement includes commitments for mutual military assistance in the event either country is attacked by a third party.
Reports also indicate that military cooperation has already taken more practical forms. In August 2025, North Korea reportedly sent around 1,000 military engineers to Russia’s Kursk region to assist with demining operations following clashes involving Ukrainian forces.
Earlier, estimates from South Korean intelligence suggested that North Korea had deployed roughly 15,000 troops in support of Russia’s military efforts, with claims that around 2,000 of them were killed during the conflict.
