White House Correspondents’ Dinner Disrupted by Security Incident
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has requested that the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner be held again within the next month after Saturday’s event was disrupted by a shooting-related security incident that led to the evacuation of attendees.
The request was confirmed by the press association following the incident at the Washington Hilton Hotel, where Trump and other officials were escorted out after a suspected gunman prompted a major security response. Although there had initially been consideration of resuming the program, law enforcement ultimately ordered a full evacuation of the venue.
White House Correspondents’ Association Chair Weijia Jiang said that Trump had expressed interest in returning to the event before security officials made the decision to clear the building completely. She later confirmed that “everyone is safe,” as authorities brought the situation under control.
The annual dinner, typically known for its mix of political commentary and media-focused satire, was interrupted before it could continue. Organizers now plan to hold the event at a later date following the disruption.
Secret Service Deputy Director Matthew Quinn praised the agency’s response to the incident, stating that the suspect “underestimated the protective capabilities” of the security services and “was stopped at first contact.” He added, “Tonight, a coward attempted to create a national tragedy,” and credited coordinated efforts by law enforcement for preventing further harm.
Investigators from multiple agencies, including the FBI and a SWAT unit, later gathered in Torrance, California, where the suspect is believed to have connections. The individual identified in reports is a 31-year-old man said to be a guest at the hotel during the event, and authorities have indicated that legal proceedings are expected to move forward in federal court.
